The Green Ash is a hardy shade tree has been a popular choice due to its fast growth, large canopy, and adaptability of soil conditions. The green ash has been heavily used in urban landscapes across the the United States. The Green Ash can be expected to grow in Hardiness Zones 2–9.
The Green Ash grows to a height of 50'–60' and a spread of about 25' at maturity. More impressively, it grows at a fast rate, with height increases of over than 24" per year in many cases! Full sun is the ideal condition for the Green Ash, which means it should get at least six hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day.
The Green Ash produces green to reddish-purple flowers that are not ornamental, typically blooming in April and yields elongated samaras that are 1–2" long.
Before installing the Green Ash in Houston, you should consider its care. Inspect for deadwood and structural problems and prune as needed in Winter. In early Spring, apply preventative treatment for Anthracnose and rust starting at budbreak. Install clearwing borer traps and/or apply trunk. In early Summer, repeat Anthracnose and rust treatments and check and adjust mulch levels. Fertilize and add mulch as needed in Fall.
